Here is a list of reminders from the Maintenance Department concerning the collection and disposal of household garbage, materials for recycling and yard waste:

  • Cans used for garbage, recycling, or yard waste must not be larger than 32 gallon. Cans must have handles and secure lids. Any cords or straps used to secure lids must able to be easily removed by us prior to dumping.
  • We are unable to dump cans weighing more than 70 lbs.
  •  Animal waste must be put into a plastic bag or container and sealed before it goes into the garbage can. We are also requesting that any lightweight, dust like material, such as ashes from a fireplace or barbecue, sawdust, sheetrock dust, etc. be put in a bag or container and sealed before it goes in the garbage can.
  • There is no need to mark cans that are used for garbage. However, cans used for recycling must clearly identified as containing recycling. A couple of large "R"s on the sides and top of the can will do the trick. Be aware that Ruston is only able to recycle certain materials. We do not accept glass, Styrofoam, plastic bags or food contaminated items like takeout pizza boxes.
  • Yard waste cans must also be identified as yard waste. A couple large "Y"s on the sides and top removes any confusion about the contents. Bags of yard waste do not have to be marked, but must not be tightly knotted, as they must be emptied into the truck.  Do not leave emptied yard waste cans in the same spot as ones that are waiting to be emptied. This way we don't have to handle empty cans.
  • Any unmarked cans that are set out will be assumed to contain garbage.
  • Make sure any can put out for pick up is no more than 5 feet from the edge of the alley or street.

The Maintenance Department thanks you for your cooperation in helping us operate in a safe and efficient manner.
