Over the next several months we will be having a number of study sessions.  The focus of these study sessions will be to encourage public input on items such as utility rates, sewer connection fees, and infrastructure funding.  I would encourage everyone to attend if possible.  We would like to hear from as many people as possible while we wrestle with these difficult topics. Our goal is to find rate adequacy and maintain it year in and year out.  We have worked extremely hard with our processes and increasing efficiency in every department.

We have a request in to the United States Postal Service requesting that Ruston have its own zip code assigned.  The issue we are faced with is having a blended zip code with north Tacoma leaves us questioning whether we are receiving the correct sales tax from the state.  In 2008 the state changed from an origin based sales tax to a destination based tax.  The issue with this new system is sharing a zip code with Tacoma leaves us questioning the accuracy of the sales tax revenue we are receiving.  Establishing our own zip code will resolve this and clearly define the town boundaries.

The topic of whether or not we remain a town or change our form of government to a code city has been an issue council has been discussing.  The evaluation of this change is underway and we will be holding study sessions to discuss the pros and cons.  The town website will have the dates and times posted once we establish the meeting times.

Thanks for reading - Mayor - Bruce Hopkins
