Mayor's Corner May 2011

I hope everyone saw the news that Ruston Police were responsible for apprehending the alleged arsonist who set fire to the Pt Defiance Pagoda. It is nice that they get some well deserved recognition for the hard work they are putting in.

Our utility payment system is now entering its second year. While we have seen 26% of the people opt to pay their utility bills on-line we have only seen 9% opt for the paperless service. While this is a personal choice I want to emphasize how much it truly saves our environment as well as the towns bottom-line. We are seeing many governmental agencies moving toward surcharging for receiving non-automated forms of payment. We are not to this point yet however this is something council will need to evaluate as our expenditures continue to rise and revenues fall.

The bank that currently owns The Commencement is actively marketing the project in hopes of attracting a buyer. The new owners will seek to complete the project and begin selling or renting the units.

We are starting to see increased activity in permit requests which translates to new growth.

Thanks for reading – your mayor – Bruce Hopkins
