Sewer Rate Increase

The City of Ruston established a loan with the USDA in March 2013 to repair the city's failing sewer system. We originally applied for a $4.9 million loan however the project came in under budget and the actual loan amount is $4.1 million.. The interest rate also dropped during the construction from 4.375% to 3.125%. Over 40 years the interest savings alone will be over $1 million.

With the sewer replacement project completed the rate increase was presented and approved by Council at the August 20th meeting. This will result in the base fee increasing by $33 per month, per connection. The increase will be reflected in your next billing statement due October 15th, 2013.

While any rate increase is unpleasant, hopefully this increase is not a surprise, as over the last few years we have continually communicated to the community that the failing sewer system needed to be replaced.
