Subject:    Point Defiance Park Entrance Construction
Project:     Point Defiance Park – Waterfront Phase 1 Improvements - Roundabout Entry
Location:   Intersection of North Pearl St., North Park Ave, Roberts Garden Road and North Waterfront Drive

Dear Resident or Property Owner

This letter is to inform you that Metro Parks Tacoma is finalizing plans for improvements to the entrance to Point Defiance Park consistent with recommendations of the 2015 Point Defiance Park Master Plan Update. The improvements include construction of a roundabout that will more efficiently and safely manage traffic going to and from the park, boat launch, and ferry landing. Other improvements include a sign welcoming visitors to the signature park; a secondary roundabout at the entrance to the boat trailer parking lot; and associated roadway, sidewalk, utility and landscape enhancements.

According to the current schedule, construction work is anticipated to begin as early as July 2017 and last for approximately six months, weather dependent.

Temporary detours will be provided to keep the intersection open throughout the construction process.

In addition, this letter serves to inform you that intersection design standards will result in the permanent elimination of vehicular access to Pearl Street from North Park Avenue from both east and west.

Two community meetings have been scheduled to review the project, answer questions, and to discuss the impacts of construction and the benefits upon completion. Those meetings are scheduled to be held:
    • May 30, 2017, Mary Joyce Community Center, 5219 N. Shirley Street, Ruston, noon – 2 pm
    • June 6, 2017, Point Defiance Pagoda, 5801 Trolley Lane, Tacoma, 6 – 8 pm

We encourage you to attend one or both of these meetings to learn more details about the project, ask any questions you may have, and hear the questions asked by others.
