Some residents of Ruston have noticed dark coloring in their water in the vicinity of the Highland-Shirley paving project.
This issue is common and is usually related to accumulation of manganese and other oxidized metals in the water. The metals accumulate on the pipe walls very slowly over time, then something such as high water flows or vibrations causes release into the water.
This issue is common enough that the Washington State Department of Health has various publications about it.

In the past, there were no known adverse health effects for our clients, but it may stain some people’s laundry and turn the toilet bowl to a dark-gray or black color. It should be cleared within a few days.
